The motorcycle is powered by an 889cc parallel-twin engine that produces 103bhp (77kW) of power and 73.8lb-ft (100Nm) of torque. For best performance, the engine is mated with a six-speed gearbox and a chain final drive, and it has a DOHC (double overhead camshaft) architecture, an 8-valve arrangement, and liquid cooling.
The fuel efficiency of the 2023 KTM 980 SMT is one of its most amazing attributes. The sophisticated engine design and current fuel injection technology contribute to the motorcycle's claimed average fuel efficiency of 61.4mpg. The gasoline tank holds 15.8 litres and delivers a maximum range to empty of 213 miles, making it an excellent choice for long-distance touring.
The 2023 KTM 980 SMT also includes a number of rider aids to increase safety and handling. Cornering traction control, cornering ABS, and three riding modes allow the rider to tailor the motorcycle's performance to their own demands. The motorcycle's frame is a chrome-molybdenum steel tube frame with the engine acting as a stressed member to provide a sturdy and lasting base for the suspension and other components.
In terms of suspension, the KTM 980 SMT is outfitted with premium WP Apex components, including 43mm USD forks up front and a WP Apex monoshock at the back. Both the front and rear suspensions have adjustable compression and rebound damping, as well as adjustable preload, to help optimise the motorcycle's handling for various riding circumstances.
The KTM 980 SMT's braking system is equally outstanding, with 320mm discs at the front and 260mm discs at the rear, both combined with high-performance radial callipers. The motorcycle also has Michelin PowerGP tyres, with a front tyre measuring 120/70-17 and a rear tyre measuring 180/55-17, which provide great grip and stability in all situations.
The 2023 KTM 980 SMT has dimensions of 2165 x 893 x 1271 mm, a wheelbase of 1502 mm, and a seat height of 860 mm. Given its size and power, the motorbike's 206kg (kerb) weight makes it comparatively light for an adventure motorcycle.

Overall, the 2023 KTM 980 SMT is a strong addition to the adventure motorbike lineup offered by KTM.
